The number of Americans signing up for unemployment compensation dropped by 6,000 last week, falling to a total of 462,000.Thursday’s report from the Labor Department shows that jobless claims have been falling for about one year.

Some economists say a recovering economy means companies will soon stop cutting jobs and begin hiring. That will be welcome news to the millions of unemployed people in the United States because a separate study by a private research group says the recession has doubled the time it takes for laid-off workers to find new jobs. The Economic Policy Institute says it now takes more than 19 weeks to get new work, a huge increase from the eight weeks it took at the beginning of the recession.
