Iranian state television reports that chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, will travel to China Thursday, as international pressure for new sanctions against Iran intensifies. The report says Jalili will meet with officials in Beijing to discuss Tehran’s nuclear activities.

China is among five United Nations members with veto power over Security Council resolutions, and has resisted calls for additional U.N. sanctions against Iran, calling instead for more diplomatic efforts. President Barack Obama said Tuesday he expects new U.N. sanctions to be in place within weeks, if Tehran continues its sensitive nuclear work. Also Tuesday, Group of Eight ministers endorsed “appropriate and strong steps” to show resolve on Iran.

Separately Wednesday, a U.S. television network is reporting that an Iranian nuclear scientist has defected to the United States and is helping the Central Intelligence Agency. ABC News cites unnamed sources who say Shahram Amiri disappeared in 2009 as part of a long-planned operation to get him out of Iran and resettled in the United States.
