A huge ash cloud from a volcano in Iceland has disrupted air travel across Europe for a second day, in the most extensive airspace shutdown since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The European air traffic control agency, Eurocontrol, said about 17,000 flights are expected to be canceled Friday, as airports across Europe remained closed. Authorities say the disruptions will continue until at least Saturday.

Poland closed most of its airspace Friday, just two days ahead of the state funeral for Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who was killed in a plane crash last week. There have been concerns that the ash cloud could prevent the arrival of world leaders to Sunday’s memorial.

But a presidential spokesman (Jacek Sasin) told reporters in Warsaw Friday that despite the closures, President Kaczynski’s family does not want the date of the funeral changed under any circumstance. The ceremony is to be held in Krakow, in southeastern Poland. Airspace over Krakow is currently closed.
