A strike by South African port and railroad workers entered its second week Monday as talks on a pay increase remained deadlocked.
The two striking unions, Satawu and Utatu, say they have lowered their demands for a wage hike from 15 to 13 percent. They say the national transport company, Transnet, is holding firm at 11 percent.
The strike has affected South African exports of metal and fruit, and economists say it may hurt the country’s economy if it goes on much longer.
The two unions began a separate strike Monday at South Africa’s Passenger Rail Agency. The agency in turn shut down all commuter rail services, forcing two million South Africans to find other ways to get to work.
The unions are demanding a 16-percent pay hike from the rail agency, and also want it to drop plans to reduce allowances and overtime pay.
