U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has denounced North Korea for the sinking of a South Korean warship, saying “provocative actions have consequences.”
Clinton condemned the incident during a joint news conference Friday with Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada in Tokyo, at the start of her three-nation tour of East Asia.
She said this “cannot be business as usual” adding there must be an “international response.”
The rising tensions that have followed the suspected torpedo attack have also influenced discussions about relocating a U.S. military base on the Japanese island of Okinawa.
Clinton said the attack on the South Korean warship shows there are “still dangers and challenges” that confront Japan and the United States together.
Clinton also will discuss a response to North Korea during her visits to China and South Korea.
She arrived in Shanghai Friday following talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.
