The U.S. Coast Guard says it is cautiously optimistic about containing the leaking oil well in the Gulf of Mexico.
In a briefing Friday, Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said a cap placed on the leaking well is siphoning gas and oil to a ship at the surface. But he said the process of containing the worst oil spill in U.S. history is still in its early stages.
Allen said oil is continuing to escape into the water from vents in the cap, but he said those vents are slowly being closed. He said it will be hours before officials can assess how well the cap is working and how much oil is being collected.
President Barack Obama is visiting the region later Friday to assess the efforts. In an interview Thursday on CNN, Mr. Obama said he is furious about the entire situation.
