The International Monetary Fund says Europe’s debt crisis could disrupt global trade and threaten Asia’s economy.
IMF Deputy Managing Director Naoyuki Shinohara told a forum in Singapore Wednesday that with advanced economies such as the United States experiencing a “subdued” recovery from the global recession, Asia will continue to lead the world economic rebound.
But Shinohara warns the region’s stronger growth prospects could potentially attract more investment, which could lead to an overheated economy if policymakers fail to take appropriate action.
Asian markets briefly stumbled at the start of Wednesday’s trading session, after the international ratings agency Fitch warned that Britain is facing a “formidable” fiscal challenge.
