Interim Kyrgyz leader Roza Otunbayeva says up to 2,000 people may have been killed in ethnic violence that has rocked southern Kyrgyzstan, ten times the official estimate.
Ms. Otunbayeva on Friday made her first visit to the region since the riots between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks began June 10 in the southern cities of Osh and Jalalabad.
The interim leader arrived in Osh accompanied by heavy security and said her government will do everything it can to rebuild the city so people can return home.
The United Nations estimates that as many as 1 million people have been affected by the unrest, including nearly 400,000 refugees who have crossed into Uzbekistan or massed near the Uzbek border.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake spoke with some of the refugees Friday during a visit to a camp and a hospital on the Uzbek side of the border. Blake called for an investigation into the violence and how it began.
