A senior Chinese official says China has overtaken Japan to become the world’s second largest economy.
Yi Gang, the country’s chief currency regulator, made the claim Friday in an interview with China Reform magazine. He said the goal had been reached sooner than expected by the International Monetary Fund, which predicted the benchmark would be reached around the end of this year.
Yi did not cite figures to support his claim, but China’s economy grew 11.1 percent in the first half of 2010 and has averaged 9.5 percent annual growth since the 1970s. China overtook Germany to become the number three economy in 2007.
The World Bank and Goldman Sachs have said China could move ahead of the United States into the number one spot within the next 20 years.
