U.S. billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are asking China’s super rich to think about giving some of their new-found fortunes to charity. The idea, however, is meeting some resistance. Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation and investor Buffett invited several dozen of the richest Chinese to dinner on Wednesday in an effort to sell the art of philanthropy, much as they have done in the U.S.
But Chinese news accounts said some of those invited were reluctant to attend for fear of being pressured. Gates and Buffett offered reassurances that they would not be pushing anyone to give away his fortune. Forbes magazine says there are 64 Chinese with more than $1 billion, most of which was accumulated in the last two decades.
