One by one, rescuers in Chile are freeing 33 miners who have been trapped more than half a kilometer underground for more than two months. Eleven miners had been raised to freedom as of early Wednesday. The first to be brought to the surface was 31-year-old Avalos, who emerged shortly after midnight (local time) in a metal rescue capsule called “Phoenix.” Wearing dark sunglasses to protect his eyes from bright lights after 10 weeks of living in the dark mine, Avalos first embraced his son and wife before being greeted by Chilean President Sebastian Pinera.
Miners emerged from the capsule to the cheers of the rescuers, officials and family members. Some quietly knelt in prayer before being taken away on gurneys for immediate medical examinations. Chile’s health minister, Manalich, said the workers rescued so far are in good health. The escape shaft is about 622 meters deep, and it takes almost an hour for each rescue. The entire rescue process is expected to last up to two days. At least four rescue workers will be sent down into the mine during the process to provide assistance.
