The U.S. central bank appeared ready on Wednesday to start pumping hundreds of billions of dollars into the American marketplace in hopes of boosting the nation’s sluggish economy. Economic analysts say they expect the Federal Reserve’s policy-setting committee to release more money into the economy, a policy called “quantitative easing.” The Federal Reserve would buy $500 billion or more in U.S. government securities over a period of several months.

Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke has advocated the plan as a way to put downward pressure on long-term interest rates paid by businesses and consumers to borrow money. That could make it easier for consumers to increase spending, and for businesses to hire more workers at a time when nearly one of every 10 U.S. workers is unemployed. But critics say the plan might not have much effect on the economy and might generate another economic ill, higher inflation.
