The U.S. Defense Department is releasing a long-awaited report Tuesday on the potential impact of ending the policy banning gays from serving openly in the military.
The Pentagon study is expected to conclude that the military can lift the so-called “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy without putting the nation’s war efforts at risk.
News reports quote officials familiar with the study as saying 70 percent of the thousands of troops and military spouses surveyed said lifting the ban would have positive, mixed or no results.
A nationwide poll released Monday found a majority of Americans support ending the ban. Fifty-eight percent of those surveyed for the Pew Research Center poll said they favor having openly gay people serve in the military, while 27 percent were against it.
President Barack Obama has said he wants to do away with the policy and has urged Congress to take action on the issue.
