Denmark’s intelligence service says it has arrested four people linked to “international terrorist networks” plotting an “imminent” terrorist attack against the Jyllands-Posten newspaper. The Danish paper has been the target of attacks since 2005 when it printed controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. The head of the intelligence agency, Jakob Scharf, described the suspects as “militant Islamists.” Scharf said in a statement that the suspects had planned to force their way into the newspaper’s building in Copenhagen and “kill as many people as possible.”
Danish officials said the four arrested are a 44-year-old Tunisian, a 29-year-old born in Lebanon, an Iraqi asylum-seeker and a fourth man whose origin was not yet clear. Three of them are residents of neighboring Sweden. Police in Sweden arrested a fifth man, a Swedish citizen of Tunisian origin believed to be part of the plot. Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen is quoted by the Associated Press as saying he was “shocked” by the news, but that terrorism would not lead the country to change its values. The suspects will face a custody hearing on Thursday on preliminary charges of attempting to carry out an act of terrorism.
