Officials of the U.S. central bank say the government has made a record profit on its controversial program to bolster the faltering economy.

The Federal Reserve profits in 2010 were more than $78 billion, a 65 percent gain from the previous year.

The Fed has been buying government bonds in an effort to stimulate the economy by holding down long-term interest rates. During the financial crisis, the agency also purchased large quantities of mortgage-backed securities in the hope of increasing investor confidence.

The profit comes from income on these investments. Officials applaud the profit, but caution that changing market conditions could turn that into a loss in the future as the Fed sells the assets when economic stimulus is no longer needed.
