Ivory Coast’s internationally-recognized leader has called for a month-long ban on the country’s cocoa and coffee exports.
The move by Alassane Ouattara is aimed at choking off funding for his rival, Laurent Gbagbo, who has clung to power for weeks in the face of international pressure.
Mr. Ouattara said in a statement Monday that the ban on exports would be in effect until February 23. The statement said anyone who violates the restriction would be subject to sanctions.
It was not immediately clear whether Ivorian cocoa producers intend to honor the ban. However, cocoa prices on the London market soared nearly 4 percent because of supply concerns.
Most countries recognize Mr. Ouattara as the winner of the November presidential election. Incumbent President Gbagbo insists that he won the poll and retains control of state institutions, including the ports from which cocoa exporters operate.
