Albania’s opposition is set to hold new street demonstrations in the capital, Tirana, nearly a month after a similar anti-government rally turned deadly. The opposition has refused to accept the results of the June 2009 parliamentary elections, and has been calling on the government to resign and hold new elections because of allegations of corruption and electoral fraud.

About 20,000 protesters marched in Tirana January 21. Police opened fire on the demonstrators when the protest turned violent, killing three people. About 150 people were wounded in the violence.

The opposition groups marched again earlier this month without serious incident.
