Cambodian health officials say the worst outbreak of dengue fever in nearly a decade killed more than 400 people in 2007 — most of them children. A total of 40-thousand Cambodians were infected by dengue fever, which is borne by mosquitoes. It causes blinding headaches, rashes, and painful muscle and joint aches. The worst cases result in internal bleeding, circulation problems, and liver enlargement.
Health officials say hospitals across Cambodia were ill-prepared to handle the outbreak. The last serious outbreak of dengue fever in Cambodia occurred in 1998, when about 16-thousand people became infected. More than 400 people were killed in that outbreak. The World Health Organization says 40-percent of the world is at risk from dengue.
