Members of the U.S. Congress are questioning the former head of the U.S. central bank, Alan Greenspan, today (Thursday) as part of a flurry of hearings aimed at figuring out what caused the current financial crisis and how to prevent another one.
Greenspan was chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve for more than 18 years, and generally opposed tight regulation of financial services.
In prepared remarks, Greenspan says he is in a state of “shocked disbelief” and now urges more regulation of financial companies. Among other things, he says firms that issue securities should be required to keep some of them to encourage the companies to accurately describe the level of risk they contain. In the meantime, Greenspan predicts a “significant” rise in unemployment.
Many stock markets around the world moved lower in today’s (Thursday’s) trading.Key markets in Tokyo, Seoul, and Hong Kong were down sharply at the close. European markets posted some losses while U.S. stocks were mixed in volatile trading. Investors were apparently discouraged by a flurry of disappointing earning reports from major companies.
