U.S. President Barack Obama is set to unveil a $75 billion mortgage relief plan aimed at preventing up to nine million Americans from losing their homes. Mr. Obama will outline the plan Wednesday in (the southwestern state of) Arizona, which has been especially hard-hit by the housing crisis.
The plan will focus on restructuring or refinancing mortgage loans to make payments affordable for struggling homeowners. The White House says the plan will help homeowners who are currently unable to refinance their loans because the value of their home has dropped. It will help modify the loans of families stuck in sub-prime mortgages they cannot afford. It also will offer help to homeowners who are at risk of defaulting, even if they are current on their mortgage payments.
In prepared remarks for Wednesday’s event, Mr. Obama says the home mortgage crisis threatens the nation’s economic stability and the stability of families and neighborhoods.
