Former Olympic champion hurdler Liu Xiang of China says he will retire from the sport if he is seriously injured again. A foot injury prevented the Chinese superstar from defending his title in the men’s 110 meter hurdles at the Beijing Olympics last August. He had surgery in the United States in December to remove four small pieces of bone from his right Achilles tendon.

Liu said Thursday (to the state-run “China Daily”) that he would, in his words, “say goodbye to the sport” if he is injured again. His coach told the paper he doubts that the former world champion will ever again reach his previous best level of performance.

The coach, Sun Haiping, said Liu might regain his peak physical fitness, but questioned whether the 25-year-old athlete could recover his mental resilience. Sun added there would be no point in Liu continuing his career if he is injured again.
