Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the United States is focused on finding “as much common ground as possible” to push the Middle East peace process forward.
Clinton says it is currently difficult to push ahead because the Palestinian militant group Hamas still refuses to renounce violence, making their participation in the process impossible.
Clinton made the comments Friday while in Brussels for a NATO meeting.
Secretary Clinton repeated her call for Hamas to recognize Israel and abide by international terms for peace talks with Israel.
Clinton also said the world must understand the United States must support and protect Israel’s security and recognize the Palestinian people’s right to produce a state “in which they can pursue their own destiny”.
