U.S. President Barack Obama has unveiled a new set of proposed budget cuts totaling about $17 billion.
At the White House Thursday, Mr. Obama said the government can no longer afford to spend as if deficits do not matter, and waste is not a problem. He said there is a lot of money being spent ineffectively.
The White House released a list of 121 federal programs to be cut or reduced in Mr. Obama’s “line-by-line” effort to trim the budget for next year. Mr. Obama said the savings add up.
The cuts add up to only a tiny percentage of the $3.5 trillion budget approved by Congress last month. Lawmakers have resisted past efforts to cut the same programs.
House Minority Leader John Boehner said his fellow congressional Republicans “respectfully suggest” that far more should be cut. About half of the cuts are to come from defense programs, and the rest from domestic programs.
