The U.S. envoy for North Korea has met with Chinese officials as part of an effort to revive stalled talks on North Korea’s nuclear program.

Special Representative Stephen Bosworth told reporters in Beijing that the United States wants to engage multilaterally and bilaterally with North Korea. The U.S. diplomat said Washington believes, in his words, that “the solution to problems…of the area lies in dialogue and negotiation.”

Bosworth spoke Thursday after meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Beijing’s top negotiator for the North Korea talks, Wu Dawei.

The special representative for North Korea arrived in the Chinese capital earlier Thursday on the first stop of a regional tour.

Bosworth and other members of a U.S. delegation will fly to South Korea Friday, before continuing on to Japan and Russia.

Prospects for a de-nuclearized Korean peninsula have diminished in recent weeks with a series of defiant moves by North Korea’s communist government.

Earlier Thursday, a South Korean newspaper reported that activities have increased at a nuclear test site in North Korea. “Chosun Ilbo” quotes an anonymous government source as saying that Pyongyang appears to be ready to conduct an underground nuclear test in the near future.
