The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, says North Korea will “pay the price” for defying the international community with what she called “provocative” missile and nuclear tests.
The U.S. Ambassador told U.S. television networks Tuesday that the United Nations Security Council is working on a “strong resolution with teeth.” But she did not specify what additional sanctions were under discussion.
An emergency session of the 15-member United Nations Security Council (including the United States, Russia and China) on Monday unanimously condemned the nuclear test. The Security Council says it is preparing a strong response to Pyongyang.
North Korea responded to the wave of international condemnation of Monday’s nuclear test by launching two short-range missiles and accusing the United States of hostility. A statement carried by North Korean state-run media on Tuesday charged that the U.S. administration is continuing policies of the Bush administration that sought to stifle Pyongyang “by force of arms.”
North Korea also fired three missiles on Monday, shortly after detonating its second nuclear device within a three-year period. While probably larger than North Korea’s one kiloton test in 2006, experts say it does not appear to represent a major technical advance.
