The U.S. State Department says it is working through the Swiss embassy in Tehran to obtain information about three American tourists who were detained Friday on charges of entering Iran from Iraq without permission.
Iranian state-run media (Sunday) quoted the head of the Iranian Parliament’s foreign policy committee (Alaeddin Boroujerdi) as saying “the case is currently on its natural course.” He did not provide any further information about the detainees.
The United States and Iran do not have diplomatic ties. Family members of one of the detained Americans (Josh Fattal) told reporters Sunday they are concerned for the trio’s well-being.
The head of security in northern Iraq’s Kurdish region (Hakem Qadir) said the three had been staying at a mountain resort near the Iraq-Iran border. He said they went to see a waterfall near the border, but apparently ventured into neighboring Iran, where they were surrounded by Iranian soldiers and arrested.
