美国总统奥巴马对国际奥委会说，他的第二家乡芝加哥已经“做好准备并热切期望”主办2016年夏季奥运会。日本首相鸠山由纪夫对国际奥委会说，日本将向世界证明，奥运会将在一个环保的城市举行。
巴西总统达席尔瓦说，自现代奥林匹克运动1896年开始以来，南美洲还没有主办过奥运会。巴西代表团制作了一份显示之前奥运会主办地点的图表，其中大多数是欧洲和北美国家。
但是西班牙萨帕特罗首相说马德里胜券在握，因为马德里拥有举办奥运会所需要的77%的基础设施。
The International Olympic Committee has eliminated Chicago and Tokyo in the first two rounds of voting for the city to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.The move Friday leaves Madrid and Rio de Janeiro as candidate cities.
U.S. President Barack Obama had told the IOC Committee meeting that his adopted hometown of Chicago was “ready and eager” to host the games.On behalf of Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama said the Asian city would prove to the world that the games could be staged in an environmentally friendly manner.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva pointed out that South America has yet to host the Olympics since the modern Olympic movement began in 1896. The delegation had a map showing the majority of previous games have been held in Europe and North America.
But Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero described Madrid as a sure candidacy, saying 77 percent of the needed infrastructure for the games are already in place.
