European Union leaders are calling for additional actions to be taken against Iran for its refusal to halt its nuclear activities. EU leaders issued a statement in Brussels Friday saying “Iran’s persistent failure to meet its international obligations and Iran’s apparent lack of interest in pursuing negotiations require a clear response.” British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said his nation is prepared to consider sanctions, and French President Nicolas Sarkozy emphasized that steps must be taken to persuade Iran to cooperate.
Speaking while on a visit to Iraq Friday, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he expects “significant” new sanctions to be imposed on Iran for its nuclear program, unless Iran changes course. He was referring to a U.N.-backed deal that calls for Iran to send low-enriched uranium abroad for further refinement. Iran ultimately rejected that deal. Western countries suspect Iran is trying to build atomic weapons – a charge Tehran denies.
