A top Pakistani Taliban commander told news media his group sent the bomber who carried out the attack on the Ashura ritual in the southern city of Karachi. He warned of more attacks in the coming days.
Fires and violent riots that followed Monday’s attack destroyed more than 500 shops along the procession route.
Thousands of people in Karachi attended funerals for the victims Tuesday, and some said they blamed the government for failing to provide adequate security.
The attack in Karachi was the third targeting Ashura observances by Pakistani Shi’ites. Officials said they believe the bombings are part of a campaign to increase sectarian tensions.
