Britons are voting Thursday in critical national elections that are expected to be among the closest in decades.

Three main party leaders cast ballots early Thursday. London Mayor Boris Johnson predicted an enormous voter turnout as several polling stations reported the busiest start to a general election in years.

Opinion polls show the opposition Conservative Party led by David Cameron, favored to win, but without enough support to secure an outright majority in Parliament.

A Conservative Party victory would end 13 years of Labor Party rule and spell defeat for Prime Minister and party leader Gordon Brown.

The race is complicated by a surge in support for the Liberal Democrat Party headed by the charismatic Nick Clegg. Clegg, who was relatively unknown before the race, gained a sizable following during Britain’s first-ever televised debates.

Whoever wins will have to lead Britain’s recovery from the global economic crisis and develop a plan for cutting the country’s record $236 billion deficit.
