The Republican Party has taken control of the U.S. House of Representatives from President Barack Obama’s Democratic Party, part of a sweeping mid-term election victory fueled by voter anger over unemployment and government spending. Republican candidates won at least 60 seats in Tuesday’s election, far more than the 39 seats needed to take control of the House. Republicans also made significant gains in the U.S. Senate, although Democrats held on to a slim majority. The sweeping change in the balance of power presents a strong challenge to President Obama’s agenda, including a health care bill passed earlier this year against strong Republican opposition. The Obama administration has also been sharply criticized for its handling of the economy.
Earlier, the president called Republican leaders, including Representative John Boehner, to say he looks forward to working together with them. Boehner is expected to be the next speaker of the House of Representatives. One of Mr. Obama’s strongest allies, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, was able to survive a strong challenge from Republican Sharron Angle, who was backed by the influential and conservative Tea Party movement.
