U.S. nuclear negotiator Christopher Hill says he hopes to make some progress toward reviving a nuclear disarmament deal with North Korea when he visits Pyongyang on Wednesday. After arriving in South Korea today (Tuesday), Hill said his main agenda in Pyongyang will be getting the North to accept a plan to verify a declaration of its nuclear program.
Hill says he hopes his talks with North Korean officials will help resolve the verification issue. Earlier this year, North Korea released a long-awaited declaration of its nuclear activities. The declaration was part of a broader six-nation deal reached last year.
Both U.S. and South Korean officials say that at the time, North Korea made a clear verbal commitment to later agree on a mechanism for confirming its declaration (such as random inspections of its nuclear sites).
