A leading human rights group says reports of police violence in Turkey are on the rise, and that little is done to punish officers responsible. Human Rights Watch said Friday while Turkey has made some progress in recent years as it tries to meet obligations to join the European Union, there has been a rise in overall reports of torture and police violence since the beginning of last year.

The U.S.-based group examines fatal and non-fatal shootings by police, and what the group calls “excessive use of violence” at demonstrations. Human Rights Watch director Kenneth Roth notes the increase of violence by officers on the street a worrying trend.
