Ugandan officials suspect the Somali extremist group al-Shabab was behind two bombings that killed 64 people and injured 65 as the victims watched the World Cup final in Kampala.
World leaders condemned the attack and pledged their support for the government of Uganda, which has thousands of troops in Somalia to defend the U.N.-backed government against al-Shabab and other militant groups.
The government said one bomb struck at a rugby club, killing 49 people as they watched the match Sunday night on large-screen TVs. The other killed 15 at an Ethiopian restaurant in a neighborhood popular with foreigners. A spokesman said there were indications the attacks were caused by by suicide bombers wearing explosives belts.
The head of Uganda’s police (Kale Kayijura) linked the attacks to recent threats from al-Shabab, which has links to al-Qaida. If so, it would be the group’s first attack outside Somalia.
